Woodburn, OR — Congratulations to Jayra Rubi Martinez-Matla and Alfonso Jesus Bartolo Aparicio, French Prairie Kiwanis Club & Success High School’s Outstanding Students for Quarter 3.

Both Jayra and Alfonso struggled at the start of online learning, but have found ways to overcome obstacles and improve their academic performance and earn top grades for the quarter ending April 15.

Teachers at Success HS cite hard work, ongoing communication, and a willingness to ask for support among the strategies that Jayra, a senior, uses daily to stay on top of work, and rise to the top of her classes this quarter. Her follow-through, commitment to school, and her mature, independent, and respectful attitudes have supported her on this journey.

Alfonso, also a senior, has consistently shown improvement in academic engagement and attendance throughout the year, leading to improved academic outcomes this quarter. Teachers commented on his consistent attendance, his participation, the good questions he asks when he doesn’t understand, and his positive attitude as reasons for his success. They add that he helps make the classroom environment better with his participation and that he is kind and respectful.

Laurie Cooper, Success Principal, says, “we are so proud of these two students who, despite the odds, and the many barriers of the pandemic, have found ways to turn it on when it matters most, and get the credit they need to graduate.”

The Outstanding Student program is sponsored by the French Prairie Kiwanis Club of Woodburn. Students receive certificate and letter recognition, a gift card, and an invitation to a Kiwanis Club meeting for breakfast and appreciation.
